Google Forms in the Art and Art History Classroom

Lately, the big buzzword in education has been data. Everybody loves data. But how do you collect data in the art class? Especially if art is subjective? It is easier in the AP Art History course because you have tests and essays which generate objective measurements. It is also difficult to keep track of a million pieces of paper from things like Open House, beginning of the year signature forms, SEL, etc.

Well, one lesson I learned from COVID is that digital is your friend. I don’t need to spend 30 minutes waiting in line at the copy machine, only to have it jam right before I use it, anymore! I have Google! I can make a Google Form which will collect the glorious data I need for me. Brilliant. I use Google Forms for everything. At the beginning of the year I send one out to my parents, in which I ask things such as “Do I have permission to display your student’s artwork?” “Does your student have permission to use power tools?” “Have you read through the syllabus?” And then the form will sort the information into a Google Sheet, that I can then code for responses as in the example below.

Yes, my student has my permission to use the tools listed.

My student has no known allergies

Please do not post my student or information on social media.

I have fully read the course syllabus and my student and I understand the requirements and expectations of the course, I have selected my decision regarding Permission to Display student artwork, I have selected my decision regarding the Permission Form for art related tools, My student is signed up for Google Classroom, I am aware of Parent Portal (grade viewer and attendance), I am aware that supplies are needed for this class and a $55 supply fee for advanced classes (AP, IB only)., I am aware that my student will need an internet capable device and a device for taking photographs of artwork and process.

I also use Google Forms in various other ways; as quizzes, as surveys on Monday where I check-in with how my students are doing, to collect information about students who need recommendation letters and as a means of voting on art show winners, etc.

Here are some examples:

There are a myriad ways you can use Google Forms in the classroom to collect your own data. This is also really helpful for presenting to administrators during evaluations.
